bit.ly link shortener (and a freeware utility to download)
Sunday, 27 June 2010
One of my favourites on-line services is the bit.ly link shortener. This a very useful function when I have to send by a chat or spell on the phone a long link to someone. In addition I can keep stats about my links on facebook for free. Now I offer to everyone a free utility to use this service without browsing to the bit.ly site.
The internet is full of these services but I personally love one of them the bit.ly this service is steady, gives a sidebar gadget to help you to make link shorter and offers statistics about the links. In addition the bit.ly offers API through google code that helps to create your own application or service linked to their engine under a free account.
This gave me an idea: To create a free utility which will connect to the bit.ly engine and short any given link without opening each time the browser. After few days I was able to use my own account to short link using this simple windows utility with no hassle and then I though that it may be interesting to offer this utility to everyone. So few modifications was necessary and the first public version is true. You can download this tiny utility and create short urls from your desktop without navigating the internet.
The utility by default uses a free account created for this purpose but you have the ability to change it to your own (if you want some privacy, or if you want to check the statistics)
You can freely download the utility here: bit.ly/b7mksH
